How to install Google Analytics in Joomla

If your not using Google Analytics, you should. Put everything on hold, read this installation guide and install Google Analytics NOW.

I'll admit right now I only use Joomla 1.5 but this method should also work on 1.0.13

It's a simple guide on how to install Google Analytics in Joomla (because the process isn't that hard).

The first thing I recommend is that you do not download a Joomla module for it. That's not just for Google Analytics, any script or html you want to add to your Joomla site, you can do so by making a simple custom html module. Only use a Google Analytics module if you need web statistics about specific pages, this “how to” is for general Google Analytics statistics for every page or your site (what most people want).

In general, only use a module if it give you some additional benefit other than a custom html module.

Log on to your administrator backend.

Just to be sure (because I don't know what editor you're using) start under gobal configuration and set the Default WYSIWYG Editor to “Editor – No Editor”. Some editors 'clean' the HTML and this could cause your Google Analytics not to function correctly.

Now go to the Joomla module manager (extensions>module manager) and click the “+new” icon. Then click the button for “custom HTML” and click “next”

Now give the module a name you will recognize like “Google Analytics Code” and then click:
show title > no.
enabled > yes

set position to any visible position (don't worry Google Analytics doesn't display anything) and finally paste in you're Google Analytics code.

Now your ready to rock! Save your module and Log on to Google Analytics and get it to check the code is working. It should be, if not try another module position/ put Google Analytics at the top of list of modules for that position.

How to make a good website?

What are the essential traits of great Web sites? After you visit a site and find yourself staying awhile, what makes you stay? A sense of humor helps. Flashy graphics are nice. But the fundamental traits that make a site work are more elusive. This article will break down the essential characteristics of great Web sites into some easily followed rules of thumb.

Most of these guidelines are just plain common sense, which seems to be a scarce commodity on the Web. The sexy proprietary page-layout and text markup features provided by Netscape and Explorer as they leapfrog each other have seduced many a webmaster into jazzing up their pages, only to be forced to put "you must use Netscape/Explorer to view these pages" at the bottom. This could be rephrased to say "these pages look awful without Netscape or Explorer." Stick with standard HTML (currently HTML 4) (1) and your pages will look good on all browsers that support it.

Overall, we've found that companies either get the Web or they don't. Your Web site should reflect the culture of the Web, which we call the "Gift Economy." (Witness Netscape and Microsoft.) Very few sites (5%) can charge for admission or require membership, and many people avoid sites with these barriers. Give away something valuable: information, software, advice, humor, and people will flock to your site.

Original content is the most important trait of a great Web site.

Site Guidelines

Here are the Web site guidelines that we follow at internet.com.

Provide credible, original content in as many forms as possible.: Original content is the most important trait of a great Web site. Sites that provide only links to other sites are essentially meta-lists (although Yahoo seems to be doing well :), while sites that have some information that's useful to the user stand out and will be revisited. A recent check of webreference.com's statistics confirms this, our content providers account for 62% of WebReference.com's total impressions. Content is King.
Provide valuable, timely information to the user, not lots of data.: Web sites should be updated regularly. Stale Web sites say "been there, done that." For the information to be valuable it should be well-edited. For external links include only the best sites with concise descriptions. For internal content be like a magazine editor, don't rush to publish mediocre or incomplete articles. Typos are unacceptible. [sic]
Share everything you learn: Great Web sites share everything they learn and hear (that's relevant of course) with their users. Give behind the scenes accounts of your latest site features, go open source, start a newsletter, and you'll get more than you give.

Customize and target your content/site to your users. Think "one-to-one" Web sites.

Custom-tailor the information to user preferences.

One of the Web's strengths is the volume of information available. That is also one of its weaknesses. Sites that offer customization features (Mylook, Slashdot.org) allow the user to filter the content they see. The future of the Web are "one-to-one" Web sites. These automated, database-driven sites adapt the content, advertising, and even the look to individual users. Technologies such as Web Objects and Cold Fusion allow webmasters to create dynamic, interactive, and adaptive Web sites.

A good example of a one-to-one Web site is c|net. c|net started with two in-house proprietary content delivery systems: Prism and Dream (2). Prism, or Presentation of Real-time Interactive Service Material, was the site management and page generation engine behind the pages of c|net. CNET has since developed a more sophisticated page-delivery system, Story Server, which powers CNET and the newer spinoff sites of shareware.com, search.com, and news.com. Story Server, marketed by Vignette, is a database-driven, template-based Web site publishing system, which we (internet.com) are transitioning to for our sites (internetnews.com is the first site to be converted to Story Server).

Template-based database publishing systems are much more efficient and consistent for publishers, give users a richer more targeted experience, and when coupled with ad software, give advertisers higher clickthroughs. Story Server stores content and graphic elements in a Sybase database, and as visitors request a page the content is "poured" on the fly into design templates.

Dream, or Delivery of Real-time Enhanced Messages, is the advertising content delivery system c|net started using in December 1995. Dream dynamically creates ad pages based on individual visitor characteristics, including hardware platform, browser type, host service, and domain. c|net's 1,000,000+ registered users receive even more specialized attention, their age, salary, and other demographics are utilized when delivering ads. CNET is now using Accipiter to deliver their ads, which has excellent targeting features. Many of the larger Web sites on the Web are using these specialized Web publishing systems, like Vignette and Autonomy.

Be responsive on a 56 Kbps modem (the typical Web user).

Use graphics sparingly to convey information. Each graphic takes another trip to the server. Consolidate neighboring graphics or use CSS'd text or table cells with background colors to speed display. WebMonkey has a policy "use graphics for graphics and text for text, not graphic text." Size graphics to fit in a typical user's window (a maximum of 465 to 532 pixels wide [i.e., the default Netscape screen to a printed page], or for max screen space viewable on all platforms use a max of 580 pixel wide tables to fit on Mac screens). It's easy to see if a site's been designed on only a PC, the page is too wide on a Mac, typically 620-640 pixel wide tables fit a PC's monitor but are too wide to display on a 14-15" Mac monitor.

Break up your tables vertically for a cascading load to appear more responsive (we use this technique on our front page). One huge table takes much longer to display content than stacked smaller tables which display one at a time. Microsoft's IE5 has a FIXED table width feature that speeds table display, unfortunately this is proprietary and does not work on Netscape's browser.

Optimize graphic file size for Web display (a maximum of 20 KB per graphic). Utilize page display speedups such as the WIDTH and HEIGHT attributes for images. Use JPEGs where possible and appropriate (continuous-toned images) and minimize the color palette of GIFs to optimize file size. Provide text alternatives to graphics for low-bandwidth users, the blind, and for speed. ALTernate text tags for images should be functional, not descriptive. If the graphic has no function, use ALT="" (i.e., ).

Optimize your HTML by removing excess spaces, comments, tags and commentary, especially on your home page, to minimize file size and download time. Products like Antimony Software's Mizer and VSE's HTML Turbo automate this process by removing excess characters and HTML to optimize your HTML and JavaScript. I manually tune our home page for minimize file size (typically 14-15K for the HTML page), but these products can help even file-size obsessed webmasters like myself. These products are drag and drop, and should be used as the last step before you upload your page (the files are harder to read after many of the returns are removed). After optimization your pages will appear to snap onto the screen.

Be easy to read.

Make your pages as easy to read as possible. Black text on a white background (as this page is set up) is the easiest to read. I've seen some nearly impossible to read pages that use backgrounds the same shade as the text (dark text on a dark background and vice versa). If you use a background, stick with the lighter shades and let the text stay black. Use a wide and short (we use 700 X 16 pixels) background graphic that's non-interlaced and under 1K or . HTML 4.0 now includes style sheets that can control page, link, and text color attributes site-wide, and make maintenance easy.

Be interactive; good interactivity engages the user and makes your site memorable.

After original content, the second most important trait a Web site should have is interactivity. The Web is an interactive hypermedia communications medium that your Web site should reflect. Sites that involve the user and have a sense of fun or adventure will get more hits, and can charge more for ad space.

Another advantage of interactivity is self-generating content. By allowing your visitors to interact with your site they actually create content for you. Script-driven user surveys and forums allow visitors to share information with others and can help shape your site to better serve their needs. Forum or chat software is a great way to do this. A great example of a user-driven site is Slashdot, a news site for nerds which posts short stories submitted by users, and allows users to easily append comments to each story.

Users equate poor organization with poor site design.

Be well-organized

Balance the number of levels (the degree of hyperization) with page length to minimize scrolling and display time.

Sun Microsystems found that users equate poor organization with poor site design in their extensive usability study of their home page. They also found that users don't want to scroll. However, the hits on Discovery Channel Online increased by 40% after they went from non-scrolling design to a scrolling design. It depends on your application. Designing pages so important content is "above the fold" is a good idea, though some sites take this maxim to an extreme and cram everything into a cramped mess. Where possible, size your pages important content to fit into the typical user's screen (465 pixels wide by 340 pixels high for a 15" monitor). Web pages should be at most two 8.5 x 11 pages in length. I've seen many examples of huge 100K+ one page sites.

Part of having a well-organized site is providing multiple ways of easy navigation (3). Supply both text and graphics for buttons. Users feel more comfortable if you maintain a consistent look and feel throughout your site.

Use an appropriate metaphor (like Zima's fridge or Ragu's Mama Cuchino Kitchen).

Using a good graphic metaphor for your interface makes the user feel more comfortable navigating your site. Good metaphors, like using a fridge as a gateway to the world of Zima, can elevate a merely good site to a great site.

Match customer profiles with Net demographics (now about 50/50 educated males/females).

Fill a niche.

Many sites on the Web are just lists that someone else has already done.

Dominate a subject area; become the site for that subject.

Don't duplicate a list when you can point to it. Leverage other people's work to reduce your workload. Let others who specialize in a particular topic keep their list up to date for you. On the other hand, don't make lists that point to lists ad infinitum, seek out the meat of the site and point directly to the article or resource. Many sites on the Web are just lists that someone else has already done.

Have a secure and automated server

Usage statistics, what's new, what's old (tours, outline), autoresponders, bad URL checkers, and search engines are some of the tools webmasters should utilize.

Tracking

Part of Web marketing is gauging the effect your pages have on the public. Sophisticated site usage tools such as I/Count, SiteTrack, WebTrends, and Interse Market Focus allow site developers and their clients to easily see the popularity of different pages, stay duration, where they come from and where they go, and even the path they take through your site. Include a what's new area to give frequent visitors a way to see what has changed since their last visit.

Automation

Maintaining a large Web site can be a daunting experience. Use automation tools where possible for site maintenance. Use local spiders such as MOMspider and LinkBot to help check for old URLs. Where you choose to link will affect how fast your links will fail. The deeper into a site you link, the more likely it is to change. Don't move popular pages in your site unnecessarily, you'll break the links to your pages. If you do move them, provide a "this page has moved" page. Many orphaned links are a sign of webmaster neglect.

Searching

Let users search your site with search tools such as SWISH and Excite for Web Servers. Offer an overview of your site with a TOC or site map.

Security

Security is often the last item addressed on even larger commercial sites. Allowing adventurous users to sniff around your files (especially your server configuration files) is not a good policy, but amazingly only 20% of current Web sites are secure.

"A Web site is like a diner. It has a core arsenal of dishes that justify its existence, but it also must have a regularly changing specials menu that keeps its regular customers coming back for more. The assumption...is that a Web citizen...visits the site on a weekly, if not daily, basis."(4)

Build it, and they will come?

A common misconception companies new to the Web have is that if they put up a page, people will visit it. In order to have a popular site, you've got to offer something to the user: information, interactivity, fun, freebies, something more than an 800 number.

Original content is important. Users may come to your site once, but to keep them coming back you've got to have fresh original content.

Sites that offer freebees get noticed. Free software, services, databases or electronic newsletters will attract users like a magnet. SGI has a FREE LUNCH area where you can download free software, computer games, graphics, and video.

Conclusions

The Web is an interactive, dynamic, and rapidly changing new communications medium that your Web site should reflect. Well-organized, edited, and timely original content set in an attractive, interactive, and consistent format are some traits of great Web sites.

How to install Wordpress MU in 8 steps

This is a documentation of my first attempt to install Wordpress MU. Since others will certainly face this situation I thought it would be helpful to tell my story.

The first steps are very straightforward. It’s only until you begin the installation that you’ll most likely encounter problems. I should note that I’m coming at this from a background in having installed the single-blog version of Wordpress many times before with no problems however in hindsight, my assumptions about WordPress have led to problems installing Wordpress MU due to the differences between it and the single-blog version of Wordpress which I only later discovered - so don’t assume.

Briefly, the differences I encountered related to database design and configuration. Another issue I had was due to my local (WAMP) development environment which produced the following error message right from the start:

“Installing to http://localhost/ is not supported. Please use http://localhost.localdomain/ instead.”

I didn’t know what http://localhost.localdomain/ was and clicking the link they gave me didn’t do anything except hang my computer. After some quick Googling, I discovered that using 127.0.0.1 (instead of ‘localhost’) remedied my problem. If this doesn’t work for you then… you’re on your own.

Let’s get started…

Step 1: Download Wordpress MU (http://mu.wordpress.org/download/)

Step 2: Extract all files into desired folder (ex: http://www.yourdomain.com/blogs/)

Step 3: Read README.txt

Step 4: Enable mod-rewrite

For Apache on my machine, mod-rewrite is not enabled by default. Instructions for enabling it are well documented online.

Step 5: Create Database (without any tables)

In PHPMyAdmin this task is fairly simple (assuming you’re working local or have root access). (Creating a database is one of the things that the installer cannot do for you.)

Step 6: Begin installation

Point your browser to whichever directory you extracted your files to (ex: http://www.yourdomain.com/blogs/). The index.php file will load automatically and either throw more error messages at you or present you with a friendly “Installing WordPress µ” screen. If you have reached the latter, you will need to make some choices and fill in some forms before proceeding. An important choice will be to decide on using sub-domains or sub-directories. This is another topic which has been well documented so I won’t go into detail. I chose to use subdirectories so this article may be more applicable if you choose to do the same.

Finish off this first step by entering your DB info and other details and clicking ’submit’.

Step 7: Fail installation and start over

This isn’t actually part of the process but I failed here so I want to document it. Basically my install just hung. After I clicked submit, I was presented with some waiting and then a page which said “Wordpress µ” or something and when I refreshed the screen, I see “My Blog” with an ‘Error 404 - Not Found’ message. Furthermore, my login page is not styled and I never received a login/password which leads me to believe something didn’t finish during the install process. My only choice was to delete the files and database and re-try.

Ok - Round 2…

Fortunately this time my computer did not hang. If your installation was successful, you will see a screen with the message ‘Installation Finished! Congratulations! Your WordPress µ site has been configured.”

You can also point your browser to the folder into which you extracted your files (ex: http://www.yourdomain.com/blog/) and if you see your blog title + ‘Just another weblog’ then you’re good to go.

Step 8: Log in and make sure everything looks good

Traditionally you would log in to your Wordpress Admin control panel via http://www.yourdomain.com/blog/wp-admin/ however when I do this, I get bounced to http://127.0.0.1/wp-admin/ which just shows ‘Not Found’. With WPMU you need to go to http://www.yourdomain.com/blog/wp-login.php and enter the username/password which was given to you on the installation completion screen.

If you can successfully log in then you’re done! From here you can start posting, try adding new accounts, change your theme, etc. If you encounter any problems I haven’t addressed here, please post them and we’ll see if we can’t find a solution.

BTW, the website I used for this quick tutorial (www.JealousBrother.com) is a site which I built that just launched a couple weeks ago. It’s a rivalry based interactive social networking site. We’ve installed MU and are still figuring on whether to fully integrate it with the site (every new user gets a blog automatically) or just allow new users to ‘activate’ their blog when they want it.

If anyone has any experience doing this / suggestions / advice / etc. I’m very open to hearing what you’ve got.

I just installed the Opera Mini 5 Beta on my Windows Mobile. What actually happened is , last week, I accidentally , cleared my storage , and everything was gone . All softwares, contacts, smses gone. Well, not too bad as my mobile now extremly lighter. Thanks to Facebook, Hotmail, Yahoo, to keep me in touch with friends.

Anyway, back to the topic. Opera Mini 5 beta has been release about a month ago. It provide a huge improvement in many ways, just name it a few, functionilty, usability, user-interface, you ll be smile. I promise.

Just try it out yourself, well for windows mobile, Opera Mini 5 beta just work extremly fine. You just need to ignore the prompt message. Yes, it work fine. Enjoy.

Microsoft's Expression Web Designer vs. Adobe's Dreamweaver

Over the last year, a new phrase has been used in the press and at conferences: Web 2.0. The term has come to represent the new era of Web technologies offered to designers, developers, and interactive artists. This new age is built on standards. There are design standards, such as Cascading Style Sheets; meta data standards, such as XHMTL; data transfer standards, such as XML; and accessibility standards for the visually impaired. Design tools for the Web artist are needed to support these standards.

For the last nine years one tool has dominated the Web design world: Dreamweaver. Now, Microsoft is poised to release a competitor. We looked at the latest beta release (CTP), released at the end of last week, to examine what they're prepared to deliver.

Standards have always been a part of Dreamweaver. The problem is that, over the last decade and a half, the standards have changed. HTML 2.0, lead to HTML 3.2, which in turn became HTML 4.0 and now is XHTML -- you can also throw in changes for style management with Cascading Style Sheets, scripting (how many different variations of Javascript can we support?) and specializations in the Web browsers themselves. The bottom line is that Dreamweaver has attempted to support too many legacy standards. The result is a bloody mess.

What is needed is a tool that designers can use to create eye-catching Web experiences, and still retain support for standards such as CSS and XHTML. This balance is hard to achieve, largely because the standards themselves can be difficult to understand and interpret correctly. Simple things -- such as adding ALT tag information to all images -- can be easily missed, but including them is essential for accessibility standards. Target.com recently forgot to fill in the ALT tag information, and they are now being sued by a group of people who claim that the company's lack of support for accessibility prevented them from trading with Target. Non-compliance, it appears, has a price tag.

The balance between supporting standards and allowing your designer creative freedom is delicate and hard to achieve. To date, the only Web designers tool that has effectively been able to allow artists creative freedom and build a site on standards is Adobe's Dreamweaver. But, hang on, Microsoft thinks they have an answer, too. The newly released Expression Web Designer is a tool for the designer that is built on standards.

And, let's be clear on this, Expression Web Designer ain't no pretty version of FrontPage; it is a tool that poses a serious threat to Adobe's dominance in the Web market.

David vs. Goliath -- or is it the other way round?
When you talk of Battles Royale with Microsoft and its competing companies, Microsoft is usually portrayed as Goliath beating up poor little David and unceremoniously spitting out the bones before moving onto the next target. In the battle of the Web design tools, the situation is a little different. First, while Microsoft is a $225 billion company, Adobe is no small start-up. Remember, Adobe just swallowed up Macromedia, the pioneering company that created Dreamweaver in the first place. In addition, Adobe's Dreamweaver is the incumbent tool used by over a million graphics artists. I have been using Dreamweaver since beta 1 of version 1. Is Microsoft really the David in this story?

The only way in which these two products can square off against each other is to look at their strengths and weaknesses as individual products.

Verify that you have guides turned on. You should see lines around the outside of your template.
View > Show > Guides.

The outermost lines are called cut/trim lines. The cut lines show where your design will be cut away from the much larger sheet of paper it was printed on. This ensures color all the way to the very edge of your cards. This method is called full bleed.

Your background colors/design MUST extend past the cut lines!

The innermost lines are called the safety lines. Anything outside these lines run the risk of being cut off. Although the cutting machines are very accurate, staying inside of this area ensures that important text/graphics won't be chopped off. It also helps make your card more readable. Keep all your non-background text, logos, pictures, etc. inside of these lines.

STEP 3

Verify that your design is in CMYK color mode. This is very important as we will not be able to print your design if this setting is not correct.
File > Document Color Mode > CMYK

STEP 4

Now you are ready to begin designing your business card. It's up to you to decide what you want the card to look like. Start experimenting and using the different tools to get the look you want. With unlimited amounts of colors and tools to choose from, anything is possible.

Remember to create separate files for each side of your business card if you wish to have information on the back.

When selecting colors in the color palette, make sure to select CMYK colors.
If you place or insert photo files, make sure they are in CMYK mode.

What is JQS.Exe?

If you open the Windows Task Manager you might notice the process jqs.exe that is running with a low priority. Jqs.exe uses about 1.5 Megabytes of computer memory and 2 Megabytes of virtual memory while running. It also initiates I/O processes frequently if those columns are activated in the Task Manager.

Experienced computer users might guess that the process is related to Java and that is the case indeed. Jqs.exe is the Java Quick Starter which was designed to improve the startup time of Java applets and applications by prefetching Java Runtime Environment files frequently into memory. That’s mainly interesting for users who work with Java on a day to day basis. Everyone else might be better of disabling the Java Quick Starter. Think of a user who encounters one Java applet per month (or week), would it make sense to run the process all the time because of those few instances where it might start the application or applet faster?

Jqs.exe is definitely querying the Windows Registry for instance. The performance increase might not be huge but you will free up some computer memory and some I/O processes on the computer system.

Now, if you want to disable the Java Quick Starter process you can do that in the Windows Control Panel. You find a Java entry there which will open the Java Control Panel.

A click on Advanced and the selection of Miscellaneous will display the activated Java Qucik Starter entry. Uncheck the box to disable the process. This will be visible in the Windows Task Manager immediately.

You can enable the process again in case you would like to use it at a later time.

What Every Webmaster MUST Know About Ruby on Rails and AJAX

If you’re an active member (or lurker) of any web development forums or newsgroups , you have likely runinto someone talking about Ruby on Rails—either to tout it as the greatest thing since sliced bread, to denounce it as a trendy and over-hyped technology, or, more likely, to ask what the heck it is and why people are so crazy about it. If you’ve previously glanced over these messages with the suspicion that their subject was of no interest to you and your work, chances are you were wrong. But fear not—In this article I’ll give you the elevator speech explanation of Ruby on Rails and AJAX.

If this is the first time you’ve ever heard the term “Ruby on Rails,” resist the urge to move on to the next article in an attempt to save yourself from reading about yet another impractical web technology. So, here’s the rundown:

1) Ruby (just “Ruby” by itself — not “Ruby on Rails”) is a programming language just like Perl, Python or PHP.

That’s it. It’s just another programming language. Albeit many Ruby programmers believe that the language has a more elegant and powerful syntax than its competitors, but when people talk about Ruby, they’re simply referring to a programming language that somewhat resembles a cross between Perl and Python.

2) Rails (sometimes referred to as “Ruby on Rails”) is a web application framework written in the Ruby programming language. If you’re writing a Rails-based application, you’re writing Ruby code.

What the heck is a web application framework? That’s a rather complex question, but in very simple terms, a framework is like the “support structure” of a program. Believe it or not, the majority of the time that programmers spend writing big web applications isn’t actually spent on the specifics of the program’s functionality, but instead it’s spent doing much more general programming—writing reusable pieces of code that can be called throughout the main application. These reusable components are collectively referred to as the program’s framework.

Good frameworks make it much easier to add, update and modify parts of an application that do similar tasks. For instance, a very common operation in web-based programming is querying an SQL database and returning the results in a way that is meaningful to the rest of the program. The Rails framework includes a high-powered database access library called ActiveRecord that simplifies the process of using SQL databases from within an application. A few other common tasks for which Rails provides pre-written libraries include: form data validation, application templates, email sending and receiving, date and time formatting and manipulation, session and cookie management, and interactive client-side functionality in web pages with AJAX (read on to see what that means).

The Rails framework, while flexible enough to be used by virtually any kind of web application, was actually born out of another programming project. David Heinemeier Hansson, the lead programmer for 37signals , wrote the Rails framework to help him develop three web applications that the company offers: Basecamp , Backpack and Ta-da List . David very generously made the decision to open-source the framework, and has served as the project’s maintainer since doing so. Rails has been featured on the popular technology news site Slashdot as well as technology publisher O’Reilly’s website (who, by the way, will be releasing a Rails book very soon).

The consequence of starting with a complete framework like Rails is that web application programmers can develop web applications much faster than if they were starting from scratch. The marketing for Rails claims that it lets you develop ten times faster than a programmer sans Rails. To really understand the power that Rails gives programmers, you should watch the Rails video, which shows a Rails application being built from scratch in 15 minutes!

3) AJAX, or Asynchronous Javascript and XML, is not a single technology, but rather a methodology of using a combination of Javascript, the Document Object Model (DOM), and theXML\HttpRequest feature of modern browsers to make requests to the remote server and conditionally update page content between browser reloads.

Clear as mud, huh? I’ll go over it piece by piece.

One of the problems faced by web application programmers is that there really isn’t a way to provide a true “interface” in the sense that we’re used to with desktop applications. With a web application, the interface is actually a series of individual requests made to a web server. Without the use of cookies and special trickery by programmers, the web server wouldn’t have any way to determine if two requests were made by the same person, or by two different people. Imagine having to include your username and password on every single page of the Amazon.com website if you wanted it to “remember” your name, preferences and 1-click settings — pretty irritating to say the least. So, in order to solve this problem, application developers invented several techniques for storing user information and program data between page requests.

Now web developers are going a step further. Rather than wait for the next full page request to update the page, through the use of a Javascript function known as XML\HttpRequest, web application programmers are making calls to the remote server from within a web page. By a “full page request,” I’m referring to what happens when you click on a link or type a URL in your browser’s address bar: the whole browser content area reloads with the new page. That’s how the web works — the new page replaces the old one (although it may be made to look like the previous page in order to give the impression that you haven’t left the site you’re on).

However a page using AJAX techniques will use Javascript code embedded in the page to make a request “asynchronously” (basically “in the background”) to the remote server and receive a response without your browser page reloading. One simple use of this technique is to have a text box to make repeated calls to the remote server as you type, and display the results in what appears to be a “drop down” menu below the text box. If you’ve ever used the Gmail address book or the new Google Suggest search tool (try it athttp://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1) you’ll see how handy just a pinch of AJAX functionality can be. If you want to see the mother of all AJAX tools, take a look at Google Maps (maps.google.com) and notice how the map seems to change without your browser reloading the page. That’s AJAX at its finest.
Now why does this matter if we’re talking about Ruby on Rails — a server side (as in, the code is run by the web server, not the web browser) programming language and framework? Rails happens to include an extensive library of AJAXfunctions that can be used without any Javascript knowledge. You use Rails functions from Ruby scripts and Ruby templates (which look very similar toPHP pages) and those functions automatically generate the Javascript that performs the AJAX magic. So by learning Ruby on Rails, you’re gaining the ability to use some very advanced Javascript techniques. A pretty nice deal!!!

The bottom line is that Rails is quickly sweeping through web development communities and converting many former zealots of other programming languages. Rails is too new to have many large-scale commercial applications that you can go out and drop into your website right away. However the first generation of viable Rails replacements for common programs (forums, blogs,CMS systems, etc.) should be ready within the next three months.

Meanwhile, web developers who are eager to try Rails programming are begging their hosts to provide support for Rails-based sites (something that we completed support for here at Site5 just earlier this week). Over the next few months, expect to see announcements from many hosts and control panel systems boasting support for Ruby on Rails.

There is no doubt that Rails will be a fixture in the web development community for many years to come, and will give the established applications and programming languages an impressive run for their money. Keep an eye out for this next-generation platform—or better yet, beat the masses and get started developing your own Rails-based site today!

Install PHP 5.2 on Vista and IIS 7 (pt.2)

Log on as Administrator Go to Start / ControlPanel / AdministrativeTools and double_click on Internet Information Service

IIS Manager window opens(see Fig 4)On the left pane click on whatever your computer name is ,and in the midle double-click on Isapi Filters.

In the Executable type C\:PHP\php5isapi.dll , where c:\PHP is the directory where you have installed PHP and in theFilter name type PHP and press OK .

With the blue arrow on the top-left corner go back to the same page as for Fig 4 ,and this time double-click on Handler Mapping,on the new window(Fig 7) click on Add Script Map on the right pane under Action.

On the next dialog Box ( Fig 8)in the Request Path Type *.php (don't forget the star at the beginning) and in the Executabletype C:\PHP\php5isapi.dll , where c:\Php is the directory where you have installed PHP and in the Name type PHP,and then click OK.

When you finish you should get a prompt like the one below( Fig 9).Click OK and close all the windows and restart your computer to reload the new configurations including the new system variables we have done in the first part.
When Vista has restarted log on as Administrator , navigate to the website root,by default C:\InetPub and right-click on the folder wwwroot choose properties and security tab and grant all permissions to IISUser and to anyone who has to save files to that folder and close all windows.

Now you ready for the test.,open a new file with notepad and type: Save it in your website root directory that should be C:\Inetpub\wwwroot as phpTest.php not as text file but all files or it wont work.if you find problems saving in the website root folder,check the security permissionsOpen your web browser and type in the address bar http:/localhost/phptest.php and ,if a page with all the php info appears ,it means that you have php succesfully installed and running.

This is about installing PHP 5.2.4-Win32 on IIS 7,the new Web Server running on Vista 32 bit.(If you have Apache read this Installing PHP with Apache on Vista) You can visit the PHP website and download the php version php-5.2.4-Win32.zip for the manual installation not the windows installer version,which,I believe is encountering some problems..As IIS 7 is not installed by default on Vista,you will have to install it as well.See this step by step tutorial to learn how to do it.How to install IIS 7

Log on as Administrator First step ,assuming you have Windows Vista installed on C:\ drive,unzip the file in this directory C:\PHP .
Then open the newly created PHP folder and copy the file php.ini-recommended and rename itphp.ini jn the same directory,this will be the configuration file for the PHP engine.To rename this file I suggest to open php.ini-recommended and click File .> Save as ,then in the dialog box type only php and in Save as type choose all files.
To tell PHP to load particular modules when it starts ,open php.ini with notepad or any text editor ,find extension_dir and change it as extension_dir = "C:\PHP\ext" and then find Dynamic Extension,in this section there are all the modules Find out which one you need from the PHP website and to enable it just remove the ";" in front of it.For example for MySql remove the ";" before "extension=php_mysql.dll "and "extension=php_mysqli.dll". To enable the PHP graphic library remove the ";" before "extension=php_gd2.dll"

Save and close the php.ini file.

I know that someone ,at this stage,recommends to copy php.ini and few dll to the Windows/System32 folder,but I believe it's a lot better keep all the files in the same directory,consider if you have to change some setting in the future,and you've forgotten where php.ini is or any other php file.To keep all the files in the same directory you have to tell Windows where PHP is.Click Start,Right-click Computer and choose Properties a window like below opens,click on Advanced System Settings on the left.

Then,in the window like the one below, click on Enviroment Variables at the bottom

In the Enviroment Variables window,under System variables, scroll down and look for the variable Path ,click on it to select it and press edit.

In the new window(fig 3) on Variable value go to the end, and type a semicolon and the path to the PHP folder.For example," ;C:\PHP " .Then another semicolon and the path to the extensions. Example " ;C:\PHP\ext " When you finish press OK.
You back on Enviroment Variables(fig 2)..This time click on New because you'll have to create a new variable.A window like fig 3 opens,this time will be empty,type in the Variable name " PHPRC " and in the Variable value type the directory where PHP is installed " C:\\PHP " and click OK.This is to tell the System where php.ini is located,so you can leave all the php files in the same folder.This part is very important,when you finish installing and you run phpinfo in your browser,check in the first part you should be able to read something like this :

MySQL's LIMIT option can be used for this. Just like you can use it to limit results, you can use it to show rows that aren't at the beginning of the result set.

For example, just adding 'LIMIT 10' to the end of a query would show the first 10 results. Appending 'LIMIT 11,10' will show 10 results, starting from the 11th, or the next 10 results. Appending 'LIMIT 21,10' will show the third set of 10.

Viruses usually attach to other programs, while worms are self-contained. Both can cause severe damage by eating up essential system resources, which may lead to your computer freezing or crashing. Any type of code or program that is used for monitoring and collecting your personal information or disrupting or damaging your computer, may be referred to as malware. In fact, malware can be any type of malicious code, even if it has not yet been identified as a worm, Trojan, etc. Good anti-virus programs can be configured to scan email for any type of malicious or suspicious code, and alert you to its presence, even if it is not currently recognized malware.

Anti-virus programs are good protection when kept up to date. However, they frequently miss certain types of malware, such as Trojans and spyware, so it is a good idea to run at least one anti-adware program in conjunction with anti-virus. Running two is even better. Utilizing a firewall is also helpful. While it won't keep malware out, it can keep such programs from accessing the internet and delivering your personal information to the intended target.
